Care and Harvesting of Fruit Trees

The increase in world population and wealth has lead to a higher demand for food and this has been true for the fruit tree industry. With developments in protecting the fruit during transport and also the speed in which it can be moved worldwide has led to very tropical and unusual fruits available to all.

In order to satisfy demand for different fruits many scientist have worked on developing fruit trees with higher fruit yields and fertilisers that help rapid growth. Other areas of science have been dedicated to the protection of these fruit trees from pests. A bad pest infestation can destroy a whole crop of fruit and be disastrous for the farmer. Today, however, society is growing to recognise the risks involved in using chemical fertilisers and pesticides on our food and that simply washing the fruit may not be enough to eliminate these chemicals from our diet. With this recognition there has been a growing movement toward the care and growing of fruit trees in a totally organic way, without the use of manmade chemicals or fertilisers. It is widely believed that fruit grown this way is better for you> Organic fruit may be better for us but it does come with a catch. Due to the lower yield produced and the cost of growing the fruit trees without aid from science, the price of organic food is quite a bit higher than the price of fruit that is grown in orchards that use chemicals etc. For many organic fruit is simply out of their price range. In cases such as those many people are now actually planting and growing their own fruit so that they can enjoy healthy food that they know what was used in helping them to grow.
